As kids are getting ready (or not :)  to head back to school, I thought I’d share a picture of Andrew that you probably have never seen.  During Andrew’s summer before 9th grade, we let him go without haircuts because we knew he was going to get a cut before heading to high school.  (Andrew’s high school, Salesianum, has a relatively strict dress/appearance code.)  I look at this picture on our refrigerator probably every day.  I’m amazed at how long his hair was.  He liked it…it didn’t hurt anyone…so it was cool.  Boy, I miss seeing those curls!

For whatever reason, complaining is really popular.   I know I’m stating the obvious, to some degree, but think about this.  Back in February, we were getting bombarded with snow (which is pretty unusual for Delaware).  Everyone was saying how much they were dying for summer to come.  Well, summer is here and it is hot as Hades.  Once again, unusually so.  Today, the temperature is much lower (good news, right?) and dark clouds are moving in.  Guess what, now I heard someone complaining that it looks like rain is moving in!  I just can’t help but shake my head.  Sure, I would love for it to be about 75 degrees with a light breeze.  But, guess what?  We can’t control that.  It is what it is.  Pre-Andrew’s diagnosis, I wanted to control everything.  I learned, the hard way, that there’s only so much we can control.  So, spend a lot of time on your attitude, the way you act with family and friends, and those other things that you CAN control.  Remember — ’serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference’!

Did you know that “National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month” is coming up in September?  Unfortunately, most people aren’t aware of this…certainly not as aware of this relative to other well-marketed cancer awareness months.  We need to put this front and center and give these brave kids a voice.

We are on a mission to get special Childhood Cancer Awareness B+ Coffee floorstands in retailers throughout the country; starting, of course, with our local area.  In the coming weeks, I will list all of the retailers who have agreed to support us.

Today, I would like to focus on one very special retailer, The Pink Turtle ( http://www.thepinkturtlestore.com/ ).  The Pink Turtle is a really cool, new store opened by Carey Pauley and Christine Kendall.  Carey is the Mom of B+ Hero, Savannah Pauley, who went to Heaven almost a year ago (9/13/09).  Savannah was a really cool kid who continues to touch so many lives.  Savannah’s picture is on the B+ Coffee floorstand and The Pink Turtle has agreed to donate all September proceeds from their SavannahStrong products to The B+ Foundation.  Please stop by The Pink Turtle and thank them for their support.  They are located in Greenville, DE in the shopping center with Janssen’s and Pizza by Elizabeth’s.  They’ve got a lot of really neat stuff…we’ve bought plenty!!!  This coming month is going to be especially difficult for the Pauley family.  Please stop by just to let them know that you’re keeping them in your thoughts and prayers.

Don’t forget -

Thurs. 8/19 — Wilmington Block Party from 5-9pm benefitting The B+ Fdn.  Music will be provided by 2-3 country bands.  The party is held between the Nemours and Brandywine bldgs downtown.  If you get your wristbands from us, The Foundation gets to keep the full $5 cover charge.  Thanks.

Fri. 8/20 — B+ Night at the Blue Rocks.  This is going to be great.  The Blue Rocks will be wearing throwback jerseys with a “B+” logo on their sleeve.  We will have B+ Heroes on the field with the players before the game.  Please order your tickets (let them know you’re with B+ Fdn and we receive $2/ticket) and wear your B+ gear to the game.  Fireworks will follow the game.  It’s going to be fun!  And, after the game, go next door to Iron Hill Brewery and order the “Double Chocolate Hill” and we receive a cut of the sales.

Enough B+ commercials for you?  :)  Sorry, but we need the money to fight the beast and help the families.

Finally, our “4th Annual B+ Foundation Golf Outing, Dinner, & Auction” is fast approaching on Mon. Sept 27th at the DuPont Country Club.  We have a few sponsorships available and would greatly appreciate any auction donations you might have (i.e. sports tickets, frequent flyer miles, hotel stays, Broadway tickets, any unique services, etc., etc.)  Also, PLEASE don’t feel like this is only open to golfers.  We want to fill the room with dinner guests as well.  You can register for either by going online at the link below.  Please contact me with any sponsorship or auction questions (joe@livelikeandrew.org
