Featured Family of the Week

Every Friday, Katie Wilson and I review Family Assistance Program applications.  Each week, we usually review somewhere around 30 applications.  Reading these applications would make you cry.  I could write about every one of these kids and their families, but there’s not enough room on the website, and to be honest, your emotions would be pulverized and I fear that you would never return to this site.  It’s a balancing act of letting you into this world of childhood cancer while not scaring you away.

This week, I’d like to introduce you to 7 year old, Javon.  This brave young man was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), a terrible form of brain tumor (not that there is a good kind), in October, 2011.  Javon has been treated at two of the finest medical institutions in the country and, in spite of this, he has now been sent home “to have hospice services”.  The application states, “His parents wish to be with him at home as much as possible before he dies.”  When this school year started back in September, Javon and his parents were just excited about 1st grade starting.  Never in their worst nightmare could they ever have anticipated the nightmare that would unfold before the school year ended.

Thanks to your generosity and support, The Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation has provided financial assistance to Javon’s family so that they can spend time with him in what the doctors believe are his final days…with their financial burden eased just a little.  And, what every family tells me when they write to us, yes, the check is needed.  But, more than anything, “you have given us hope” and “you show us that someone out there cares”.  Thank you, B+ Nation, for caring…when you could have looked the other way!

Whether you live in Delaware or on the other side of the globe, you can join us for the “6th Annual B+ Fighting Childhood Cancer 5k Run/Walk”.  If you’re local, create a team and round up your friends.  If you’d prefer to go it alone, join us as an Individual Participant.  If you live in another state or country, join Ali’s team – “Andrew’s Angels”.  Please help us make this the biggest and best 5k ever.  Remember, you can run it, walk it, just come out to watch, or stay home and support a team with a donation.  We need you!

The 6th Annual B+ Fighting Childhood Cancer 5k Run/Walk is Thurs. June 21st at Salesianum School.  As always, the highlight of the night is not the ton of free food, but the recognition of our “B+ Heroes” (children with cancer and their siblings) at the end of the night.  You don’t want to miss this.

UDance Wins University of Delaware 2011-2012 Outstanding Philanthropy Award

Congratulations to UDance Executive Co-Chairs, Ali McDonough & Eric Oppenheimer, and all of the students who participated in UDance this year, on their selection as the 2011-2012 Outstanding Philanthropy on campus.  Personally, I think this recognition is long overdue and I’m sure that I speak for Ali & Eric when I say that they share this award with all of those students who came before them and made UDance what it is today.  UDance has not only been the largest student-run philanthropy on campus for a few years now, but the impact that it makes on our B+ Heroes, their families, and the UD students themselves is just indescribable.  Congratulations, Blue Hens!!!
