Making a Difference
Your Impact
I'd like to introduce you to 4 year old Blake. Blake has been diagnosed with leukemia. Blake's Mom tells us that he loves dinosaurs, wants to be like his Dad, believes in miracles, wishes for "lots of fun", and is afraid of doctors. (We routinely send out an 8 question questionnaire with our checks. The answers are priceless.) What touched me the most in Blake's Mom's note, though, was when she said that, for the first time, she finally felt that she had someone to turn to when we - The Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation - were there for them. Thank you for making this possible.
Dear B+,
We want to thank you all very much for the grant you have given our family! With that grant, you have made a lot of things possible when we have been struggling so badly. We now have a current registration on our car and have done repairs necessary to get my baby to treatment! For that I will be forever grateful! For the first time during our journey, I have felt that I had a place to turn to for help and a family who knows this tragedy all too well. On behalf of myself and family, I want to say how sorry I am for the loss of your beloved Andrew. We just really thank you for your support, care, and love! Blake's family.
I also really appreciated reading the note below from Kevon. Getting notes directly from the kids is especially meaningful. Notes like these remind me that we ARE making a difference. Thank you.My name is Kevon. I am 16 years old. I am from Jamaica and I love basketball. I would like to become a pilot. I was diagnosed with a type of cancer called osteosarcoma in October of last year. Since then I have been in and out of the hospital. I am so grateful for your kind support toward me and my family. I am sorry about your son Andrew. My God will continue to bless you in whatever way he can in helping others like myself. Yours truly, Kevon.
The RACE Act Becomes Law
Step #1 has been accomplished with the signing of the RACE Act. The RACE for Children Act authorizes the FDA to require companies developing cancer drugs to also develop their drugs for children if the molecular target of the drugs under development are relevant to a pediatric cancer.
Step #2 will intensify in September (coincidentally Childhood Cancer Awareness Month) when the Senate takes up the STAR Act. STAR stands for Survivorship, Treatment, Access, & Research. The STAR Act is the most comprehensive childhood cancer bill ever developed. Please write or call your US Senators and ask for their support. We especially need to gain support of Republican Senators.
