Wow… a lot to update you on.
I would like to thank Reservoir HS in Fulton, MD for not only inviting me down to speak, but also for holding a “B+ Bake Sale” to raise awareness and money for the battle against childhood cancers. Thank you, Shayna Tiller, and all of the Gators of RHS.

Last week, we had our last race of the season for the B+ Racing Team. As we do before every race, we visited kids in a local children’s hospital. This visit was to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, OH. Nationwide is a very impressive hospital and one that we have provided financial assistance to for their families for quite some time. I had the privilege of presenting a check in person to one of the families (see picture).
At the Drivers Meeting on Friday, Al Carter, Hugh Plumb, and I presented a check for $50,000 to help open up additional clinical trials for uninsured and underinsured kids with cancer in three Chicago hospitals (UIC, Rush, Stroger). Your support will help thousands of children have a better chance of living while also improving the chances of significant discoveries based upon the research conducted as part of the trials. The check was presented to a very bright and passionate woman, Dr. Mary Lou Schmidt, the head of pediatric oncology for the clinical trials for this consortium.
By the way, we finished an impressive 5th in the race!

While in Ohio, we learned of the tremendously sad news of the senseless murder of New Castle County Police Department Sgt. Joe Szczerba. I never had the privilege of meeting the Sgt., but I know his brother, sister-in-law and their kids. You won’t find a nicer family and I’m sure that Sgt. Szczerba was just as impressive. As I have written about before, there is a tremendous bond between all Salesian brothers (students and graduates of Salesianum School). We felt- and continue to feel – the love and support of Andrew’s Salesian brothers. Sgt. Szczerba is a graduate of Salesianum and I am sure that the entire Szczerba family will be enveloped in this love and support at this brutally difficult time.
May God bless this family.
Tenui Nec Dimittam.
