Within our world of childhood cancer, there is a podcast called “This Week in Pediatric Oncology” (TWIPO).  TWIPO covers various pertinent topics and the most recent one dealt with the “F Word of Childhood Cancer — FUNDING!” .  I was privileged to be one of the panelists on the podcast, along with 4 well-respected pediatric oncologists.  The podcast runs about 45 minutes long, but it is definitely worth your time.  As Dr. Tim Cripe, the host, says “If you’re blood isn’t boiling after listening, you weren’t paying attention”.

On the TWIPO podcast, Dr. Cripe referenced a Facebook page created for the 250,000 childhood cancers to rally for increases in childhood cancer research. If all of the survivors could mobilize and make their voice heard, they could be a powerful lobbying group. Whether you are a childhood cancer survivor or not, please visit the FB page and “Like” it. We just started it and want to get some momentum behind it. Thanks.

Featured Family of the Week

I would like to introduce you to E., a 7 yr old boy from Joplin, MO who is battling a tumor on his brain stem.  E. was diagnosed in Oct. 2009 and has been through chemo, radiation, multiple brain surgeries, and numerous hospital stays.  At home, he is on oxygen at night for his breathing issues and has right sided weakness.  He is on many medications and he and his family travel 1 hour each way for his occupational and physical therapy.

His primary care for his cancer is handled at a hospital 4 1/2 hours away from the family’s home.  E.’s family makes $18,000 a year and their church, school, and E.’s Dad’s business were all leveled by the F5 tornado that came through Joplin last May 22nd.  E.’s Mom was laid off and stays home with her boy to nurse him back to good health.

As you can see, this family is battling through a lot…and, of course, none of which is their fault.  Thanks to your generosity and support, The B+ Foundation was able to help E. and his family make their life a little less difficult.  Thank you all.
