Visit to Seattle Children’s Hospital and Ben Towne Center for Childhood Cancer Research

Chris, Ali and I decided to get away for the Thanksgiving holiday and picked Seattle for a long weekend.  A bonus of visiting Seattle was that it gave us the opportunity to visit Seattle Children’s Hospital, a very well-respected children’s hospital.  It certainly lived up to its reputation.  A little known fact is that Seattle Children’s is our #1 in hospital in terms of families assisted.  As you know, we help families nationwide and we will give out approximately $500,000 again this year to families of kids with cancer.

Following our tour of Seattle Children’s, we headed over to the Ben Towne Center for Childhood Cancer Research.  The Ben Towne Center is a research facility of Seattle Children’s Hospital, under the direction of Dr. Michael Jensen.  Dr. Jensen and his co-workers are involved in a very novel approach of re-programming T-cells to attack the cancer as a possible alternative to chemotherapy.  You can read a little bit more about this work at:

The Road to Recovery for Joey B Starts Tonight

As I write this, donated marrow is being processed for transplant into B+ Hero, Joey Borowski.  By the time you wake up tomorrow, our buddy Joey will have new marrow in him and hopefully be rid of this cancer once and for all.  As you will recall, Joey underwent 3 1/2 years of treatment for leukemia and was free of it for 14 months.  The cancer relapsed in September, he had his cranial and full body radiation over the past 10 days, and the transplant is TONIGHT!!!  Thank you to Joey’s anonymous marrow donor out there.  When you checked into the hospital this morning, I hope you realized the significance of the gift that you gave today to Joey, his family, and friends.  Joey still has a long road ahead of him, so please keep Joey and his family in your prayers.  You can follow Joey’s progress at www.caringbridge.org/visit/joeyb
