My Halloween present to the B+ Nation… a picture of Andrew and Ali on Halloween 1994.  (You might not be able to see it, but Andrew is sporting Elvis’ long sideburns.)

Watching patients being moved from one NYC hospital to another during the hurricane reminded me just how fragile life is.  I’ll never forget the 10-15 times that we had to wheel Andrew down to the OR from his room in the PICU.  Several of those times, Andrew was on a ventilator, an electrically-powered breathing machine.  We didn’t have a battery-powered substitute device, so every time Andrew was taken off of the ventilator for one of these interminably long walks, a nurse would have to stand along side of the bed and squeeze a rubber ball to push air into my son’s lungs to keep him alive. If she stopped the rhythmic squeezing of that $.99 piece of rubber and tubing, my son would die.
