Research Update & B+ 5k
Research Update
While most people like to hear the heartwarming family assistance stories that we are able to share - and for good reason - I get really geeked up about the research that The Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation is funding as well. I don't want any more kids and families to suffer. We need to make progress on cures or, at the very least, better treatment protocols. Seventy three percent of kids who survive childhood cancer have chronic side effects...and that's just not acceptable. BUT, we are making great progress. It's SO exciting!
This week, I got a chance to spend some time with 3 research teams at Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children's Hospital whose work we are helping to fund. It's really just amazing! The respective projects deal with osteosarcoma (bone cancer), AML (type of leukemia), and micro-RNA, which can be applied to multiple types of cancer. While I will admit that I'm impatient and would like faster progress, I return so much more energized following these lab visits. I thank our Scientific Advisory Board of 8 leading pediatric oncologists who review all of the proposals we receive. Our new grant cycle will be opening up shortly (June 1) and we will be awarding another $1,500,000 to ten researchers. Stay tuned.

While it's a little late, I'll leave you with a picture of "Andrew's Tree" at his grade school alma mater; decorated for Easter. Warms my heart.
