The Forgotten Heroes

I'd like to shine a light today on the 'forgotten heroes' of childhood cancer -- the siblings.  The child with cancer often receives a lot of attention, understandably.  Lying in the bed at night worrying about their little brother or wondering why their big sister is getting all the toys is a tremendous burden that is carried by the siblings.  Mom & Dad, out of necessity, at least for the time being, have to focus a disproportionate amount of time on the child with cancer.  And, down the road, whether the child with cancer survives or goes to Heaven, the siblings face unique challenges.

And, in spite of these challenges, we see tremendous love and support from siblings.  Take a look at the attached picture.  Phoebe, who battled retinoblastoma and is doing well, is honored on the batting helmet of her brother and the ice skates of her sister.  There are many ways the brothers and sisters support their sibling; this is just one of the many really nice public examples.
